National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is widely-used, globally recognized and adopted regulatory resource in building design and construction in reference to building code compliance pertaining to life safety, fire, electrical, and other hazards related to building design and construction.  Authorities having jurisdictions (AHJs) worldwide are adopting NFPA along with International Building Code (IBC) (Both codes are interchangeably referred to as ‘Code’ in this document).

The added benefits in applying and adopting the provisions of NFPA and IBC are the third party laboratory testing and certifications that support and comply through validation of various provisions of the building code.

This module’s key initiative is to adhere with RA 9266 mandate to develop professional architects’ practice to “world-class and globally competitive” and conversely to meet the challenges brought by ASEAN economic integration, it is paramount to raise the technical competency of Filipino architects in international building code and relevant industry standards to keep abreast of the statutes governing the construction industry.

Module Objectives

At the end of the module, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the need for implementing the provisions of NFPA and IBC.
  • Describe the applicability of codes and industry standards.
  • Determine and differentiate occupancy and area separation.
  • Determine occupant load and means of egress capacity.
  • Determine requirements for passive fire and safety protection of interior finishes.
  • Perform life safety analysis using key provisions of NFPA and IBC

Module Outline

  • Overview of NFPA 5000 and IBC
  • Adoption of NFPA by GCC and Singapore
  • Brief overview of NFPA vs NBC
  • Building Code requirements (Life Safety Analysis)
  • UL Standards
  • Building Code analysis

To keep abreast of building envelope statutes and techniques, it is paramount to raise the technical competency of practicing architects in specifying the facade glazing system in compliance with BS EN 410, which is the basis for Green Mark (Green Building Index, Malaysia and Green Mark, Singapore).

BS EN 410 will be introduced to the participants, which is widely and commonly used standard for façade design. With the support of manufacturer’s proprietary online software, specifying high performance glass will be demonstrated in real-time. The results of this quick, arms-length approach, participants will be able to develop technical specifications and establish project baseline for glass types and makeup to meet project and safety performance.

Introduction to performance testing, quality control, and construction technique will also be demonstrated.

All topics are based on real, mega-projects.

Masterclass Objectives

At the end of the module, the participant will be able to:

  • Understand glass spectral values based on BS EN 410
  • Use Inhabit ETTV online app for SC and U-value parameters
  • Use Pilkington or Others glazing calculator
  • Develop an outline specification based on the above

Masterclass Outline

  • BS EN 410 Glass Spectral Values
  • Shading coefficient/G-value
  • Establish SC to Green Mark - Inhabit ETTV Facade designer
  • Glass makeup - Pilkington calculator
  • Stick vs Unitized System
  • Structural Sealant application and testing
  • GANA glass making and processing
  • Glass Schedule
  • Performance testing
