This collection explores the fragile tension between identity and burnout in adulthood. It reflects the disconnection that arises when external demands overshadow personal fulfillment, leaving individuals estranged from their authentic selves. Through design, the collection becomes a space for self-exploration. A confrontation with exhaustion, a reclamation of individuality, and a search for purpose amid the relentless pursuit of success.

Maxine W. Gata is a Fashion Design and Merchandising student at De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde. Her work delves into the spiral of emotions brought by adulthood burnout, reflecting on the ways identity becomes blurred under the weight of responsibility, societal pressures, and the pursuit of success. Through her designs, she explores the disconnection between one’s authentic self and external expectations, translating this struggle into garments that embody both fragility and resilience. For Maxine, fashion is not only a creative practice but also a form of self-exploration.

One of the most challenging parts of designing this collection was finding the right materials, as no single material was enough to fully express one concept, which pushed me to layer, combine, and experiment more intentionally. Through this process, I learned that material research and exploration are just as critical as silhouette in communicating a strong narrative. My favorite stage ended up being the ripping of the cheesecloth, as it was deeply satisfying to transform something broken and raw into an accessory of beauty that strengthened the concept. This collection also helped me understand my identity as a designer, making me realize that I am highly invested in how materials, fabrics, and textures translate conceptual ideas into physical outcomes. Overall, the process reinforced my appreciation for material-driven design and showed me that experimentation, even when difficult, leads to the most meaningful results.
