De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde received a Plaque of Distinction from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) during the 25th Anniversary Recognition Ceremony of the AFP Educational Benefit System Office (AFPEBSO) held on August 1 at Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
Benilde was honored for its long-term partnership with AFPEBSO and its scholarship program for children of military personnel who died or were injured in service. The partnership began in 2009 under then President and Chancellor Br. Victor Franco FSC, through a formal agreement with AFPEBSO. Since then, the College has offered full scholarships to qualified applicants, covering 100% of tuition and fees. Priority is given to children of soldiers killed in action, discharged with disability, or affected by combat. Benilde also supports scholars from the Philippine National Police (PNP), especially those assigned near its campuses.
Despite the budget limits brought by the COVID pandemic, the scholarship program continued. The number of slots was temporarily reduced, but Benilde remained committed to supporting AFPEBSO scholars. The College is now finding ways to increase the number of slots and move closer to how many were offered before the pandemic.
Mr. Angelo Lacson, Vice Chancellor for Academics, spoke on behalf of Br. Edmundo Fernandez FSC, President of Benilde. His message served as an affirmation of the College’s mission to make education accessible and to support the families of those who serve. He shared that the College has supported 64 AFPEBSO scholars and 67 PNP scholars to date. Most of them have graduated, with a success rate of 95%. One of the first AFPEBSO grantees, Emmanuel Dayaday, is now a commissioned officer in the Philippine Air Force.
“These aren’t just statistics,” Mr. Lacson said. “They are success stories. These graduates are now professionals, entrepreneurs, artists, officers, and more importantly, beacons of hope for their families.”
He also emphasized Benilde’s inclusive approach to education. “Whether you’re from Malabon, Mindoro, or military quarters, as long as you carry hope in your heart and the will to learn, you are welcome.”
As part of the Lasallian Mission, Benilde believes that education is a right, not a privilege. The College works to make learning accessible to all, especially those from underserved communities. This mission is rooted in the values of spirit of faith, zeal for service, and communion in Mission, and continues to guide Benilde’s programs and partnerships today.
