On 12 September 2025, Benilde and Carlow University formalized a strategic academic partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing held at Vatel Manila. The agreement lays the groundwork for collaborative initiatives in teaching, research, and experiential learning, with both institutions committing to shared programs that span student mobility, faculty exchange, and transnational education.
The partnership opens up a wide range of possibilities, such as student and faculty exchanges, joint teaching and supervision, and online courses with micro-credentialing. Both institutions are also exploring shared seminars and conferences, cooperative research, and globally networked learning experiences.
Carlow University is a private Catholic institution in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, founded by the Sisters of Mercy. Its programs are rooted in advocacy and designed with people in mind, whether in digital media, healthcare, social justice, or emerging technologies. These strengths sit comfortably alongside Benilde’s own priorities in inclusive education, institutional storytelling, and modular learning. Both schools share a commitment to ethical leadership and community-based design, with Carlow’s approach echoing Benilde’s work in safe spaces, gender sensitivity, and accessible learning.
Carlow’s focus on values-driven education and inclusive design finds a clear echo in Benilde’s ongoing work. Just recently, the College’s Gender and Development (GAD) Specialist led an orientation on the Safe Spaces Act, helping students, faculty, and staff understand their rights and responsibilities in creating respectful, inclusive environments. It’s the kind of everyday care that sits at the heart of Benilde’s campus culture, and it’s the kind of work that finds meaningful parallels in Carlow’s own advocacy-driven approach.
Present at the signing were Vice Chancellor for Academics Angelo Marco Lacson and School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies Dean Bea Francisco, representing Benilde’s academic leadership. Carlow University was represented by Assistant Professor of Digital Art and Emerging Media Fran Flaherty, whose work in inclusive design and community media adds depth to the partnership’s creative potential.
With both institutions committed to flexible, purpose-driven education, the MOU sets the stage for pilot programs and shared platforms that respond to real-world needs. Whether it’s a COIL course on advocacy messaging, a joint seminar on inclusive media, or a summer internship that bridges both campuses, the partnership is built for real-world impact. More updates will follow as initiatives take shape.
