Graduate in Focus Presents Flexible Study and Research Culture in Digital Media

25 May 2026

On May 21, 2026, the Benilde Marketing Center held its Graduate in Focus session online via Zoom. Creative practitioners from different backgrounds joined the session, not only Multimedia Arts graduates but also professionals from other fields who wanted to learn more about the Master of Digital Media program.

Rebekah Hashmi, BMC’s Coordinator for Graduate School Programs, opened the session by saying, “This event aims to provide you with a deeper understanding of our graduate programs and how they can support your professional growth.” She explained that Graduate in Focus is the version designed for graduate programs, and this edition featured the country’s first graduate track in digital media. She also noted that the session would include a program presentation, a Q&A, and an overview of admissions requirements and available graduate school grants.

MDM Program Coordinator Carmela Lapeña explained, “Our curriculum is built on four central pillars: digital media applications and content, digital media strategies, new media, and data.” She said these areas give students both technical mastery and a strategic mindset. She added, “We ask our students to engage with socio‑cultural dimensions that shape identity.” Her point was that the program wants creative work to be meaningful and socially relevant, not just technically sound.

She also described the program outcomes. “We develop critical thinkers who address socially relevant issues, innovative creators who build new bodies of knowledge, digital pioneers who create new production frameworks, lifelong learners who can adapt to shifts, and principled Benildeans who inspire inclusive and ethical environments.” In other words, the program aims to shape graduates who can lead, innovate, and create responsibly in the digital space.

The Master of Digital Media runs for six trimesters. Students begin with foundations and theory, then move into design and user experience. Later terms allow them to choose electives in filmmaking, branding, animation, photography, data visualization, and analytics. They can also take subjects such as Human Image in the Arts: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives, Philippine Folklore and Folk Traditions, Philippine Art and Society: Issues and Perspectives, and Philippine Indigenous Art and Its Narratives. A directed elective lets them explore specialized topics in depth. The journey ends with a capstone project developed across two courses, from prototype to defense, guided by industry mentors. Lapeña explained, “It’s one project developed across DMProj 1 and DMProj 2.” The capstone is designed to bring everything together in one final creative work.

Classes are scheduled to fit working professionals. Lapeña said, “If they’re on a weekday, they would be 6 to 9 PM, or on a Saturday.” She clarified that classes are mainly held on Tuesday evenings, with Saturday as a possible alternative day. Most classes are face‑to‑face at the Design + Arts campus, especially those that use labs equipped with VR gear, animation tools, and green screens. Hybrid arrangements are also possible depending on the term setup. The schedule makes it possible for students to balance work and study while still having access to advanced facilities.

SNMA faculty member Jeryc Garcia gave a candid view of everyday life in the program. “Daily life in the MDM program is painful and frustrating, but also glorious,” he said. Garcia explained that the program holds students to global standards and treats creative work as equal to research. His words showed the rigor of the program, but also the pride in seeing students grow through challenge. He added, “By joining the MDM program, your life definitely will change.” His message was that the program pushes students to expand their perspective and break through in their practice.

Garcia also spoke about creativity. “There’s nothing new, but there are ways to make things new. We break down existing conceptions, reimagine things, and in those acts we come up with something novel.” His statement reinforced the program’s focus on innovation through rethinking and reimagining. He also emphasized inclusivity, saying, “You are free to bring whatever current practice you have into the Master of Digital Media program. We even have Dance program graduates producing amazing projects.” His point was that the program welcomes diverse disciplines, not only Multimedia Arts.

Carmela added her perspective on student experience. “It is life‑changing. Difficult but fulfilling. Students have learned new ways of thinking and doing.” She also confirmed that the curriculum includes emerging technologies. “Yes, but it’s approached through a critical lens,” she said when asked about AI. These remarks showed that the program is both challenging and responsive to current trends.

Student projects already show the program’s research culture. At the SNMA Research Fest 2025, Dino Raphael Dizon presented eye.niche, which used computer vision for community art engagement. Terence Giourdan Gonzalves introduced Logcrux, a linked data system for audiovisual analysis. Gonzalves also produced Mga Muni‑muni sa Gitna ng Ambon, which won a jury prize at the Sinag Manila Film Festival. The Research Fest itself is SNMA’s annual platform for faculty scholarship, fostering dialogue with guest panelists from other institutions and encouraging meaningful exchange within the academic community.

Special sessions of Program in Focus can be arranged for interested groups via Zoom or other online platforms. These sessions give future students the chance to hear directly from faculty and coordinators, learn about flexible study options, and see how research and creative practice come together in everyday student life. The Graduate in Focus session showed how the Master of Digital Media program combines flexible study with a strong research culture, making it a valuable opportunity for anyone considering graduate studies.
