Senior High School students from the Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) and General Academic Strand (GAS) of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde recently completed the second batch of this year’s Animo Create: Benildean Youth Shaping What’s Next, a three-day design thinking workshop led by the Hub of Innovation for Inclusion (HiFi).
Held from July 2 to 4 at the Augusto-Rosario Gonzalez Theater and Benilde HiFi innovation spaces, the workshop guided students through the full design thinking cycle: empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. This latest run builds on the success of the first Animo Create workshop held in June, where ABM strand students developed solutions for transportation, disaster preparedness, and mental wellness. Their projects included a real-time train information system, a flood survival kit, and a portable aromatherapy device.
Throughout the workshop, students worked in teams to identify relevant social challenges, generate user-centered ideas, and prototype impactful solutions. Three standout projects emerged from the final pitch presentations. BeInclusive by Team KAMPON NI ISSY proposed a workshop-based initiative that fosters open dialogue among post-pandemic students, addressing identity, mental health, and peer connection through safe, inclusive spaces. SENYAS by Team ABYSS introduced a dual-format sign language learning tool that combines a smart eBook and curriculum policy proposal, designed to promote accessibility and cultural awareness across the Benilde community. HainGo by Team SIGLA presented a wellness-forward food cart system offering affordable meals linked to a mobile app with QR-coded activities that promote physical, emotional, and financial well-being.
The July edition was led by Ar. Alexander Abear, alongside a team of Impact Week, trained design thinking coaches who provided mentorship throughout the process. The workshop was made possible through the collaboration of multiple Benildean offices and centers, including the Center for Intellectual Property Management (CIPM), Center for Partnership Advancement (CPA), Center for Inclusive Education (CIE), Benilde Educational Technology Office (EdTech), Benilde Marketing Center (BMC), Center for Social Action (CSA), and Center for Admissions, Scholarships and Grants (CASG).
By hosting workshops like this, Benilde Senior High School shows its commitment to continuously improving its programs for college and career preparation. As a DepEd Pilot School for the Strengthened Senior High School Curriculum, Benilde SHS is among the first private institutions to implement enhanced college readiness, expanded electives, and deeper work immersion experiences.
This commitment to quality and innovation is further supported by Benilde SHS’s recent partnership with the British Council, which integrates Aptis English proficiency testing into its regular assessment framework. The collaboration gives teachers and students a clearer picture of language skills and helps the school design programs that meet international standards.
The July workshop gave students a chance to learn how design thinking helps them question the usual way of doing things, come up with new ideas, and take meaningful steps forward. Through initiatives like Animo Create, Benilde SHS continues to empower students to think critically, collaborate effectively, and design solutions that matter.
