On October 22, 2024, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde announced a significant partnership with McDonald’s Philippines during an event held at the Design+Arts Campus. This collaboration aims to leverage the creative talents of Benilde students to help McDonald’s enhance its sustainability efforts.
Benilde’s School of Environment and Design houses specialized design programs, including Architecture, Industrial Design, and Interior Design. This partnership provides a valuable opportunity for SED students to apply their skills in a real-world context, supporting McDonald’s in its efforts to enhance sustainability while gaining practical experience. Fashion Design and Merchandising, and Textile Design programs are also part of Benilde SED’s offerings.
Ali Hernandez, the AVP of Corporate Relations & Impact at McDonald’s Philippines, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “Our commitment to sustainability drives us to seek fresh ideas, and partnering with Benilde allows us to tap into the innovative minds of young designers. This initiative is about transforming our restaurants and inspiring the next generation to think critically about the environment.“
Key speakers from both organizations highlighted the value of education and community support. Architect Harvey Vasquez, Dean of the Benilde School of Environment and Design, expressed, “By connecting our academic programs with industry partners like McDonald’s, we empower our students to create impactful solutions. This partnership illustrates the synergy between education and real-world applications.”
This isn’t the first collaboration between Benilde and McDonald’s; they previously worked together to develop training programs aimed at enhancing accessibility for the Deaf in McDonald’s restaurants. Hernandez noted, “Our earlier project showcased the power of teamwork, and now, with this new partnership, we look forward to addressing environmental challenges through creative design.”
Students from various disciplines at Benilde will have the chance to work on projects that focus on sustainability and design innovation. Katherine Correa, Chair of the Interior Design Program at Benilde, expressed her excitement about the initiative: “This partnership provides our students with a platform to apply their classroom knowledge to real challenges, which is an invaluable experience as they prepare for their careers.”
This partnership is a big step for McDonald’s in its effort to become more sustainable and highlights Benilde’s role as a leader in design education. Both institutions are eager to explore innovative solutions that benefit the environment, making this partnership a promising venture for all involved.
