Benilde Blazers Unleash the ‘Power of 100’ in 2024 Pep Rally for Centennial NCAA Season

16 September 2024

The Benilde Blazers Pep Rally, organized by Benilde Center for Sports Development (CSD), had the Benildean athletes take center stage last September 12 at the Benilde Sports + Dormitory Complex. This comes after the commencement of the National College Athletic Association’s (NCAA) Centennial Year last week during their opening ceremony, September 7.

The Complex’s gymnasium—which was inaugurated in 2020 and houses both student scholars and resident athletes—was filled with revelry and cheers from the 12 varsity teams and the Benildean Community as the pep rally presented the rosters of athletes that will be representing the College in their respective events, including the NCAA Season 100 rookies.

Chancellor Benhur Ong continued the festivities by addressing the athletes, coaches, benefactors, faculty, and students in his opening remarks. “Today, we stand united in anticipation as we embark on this journey. The centennial season is more than just a competition; it is a celebration of the legacies that we will create together,” he declared.

He then recapped the successes of the varsity teams during the previous season—especially the championships. Chancellor Ong also emphasized that these Season 99 achievements were not mere successes but also were a testament to the skill, heart, grit, and perseverance of every Blazer.

What followed were a recap of Benilde’s roots in the NCAA and a series of performances done by each team, which highlighted both their athleticism and good game in partaking in the fun.

Among the highlights of the pep rally was the performance of the pep squad, who closed out the event with a routine featuring athletes from other varsity teams.

Delivering his closing remarks, CSD Director Stephen Fernandez emphasized how great Benilde and the athletes are. He also took the opportunity to invite everyone present and those watching online to watch the games and together celebrate the Animo spirit. “To the athletes, support one another. Start strong!” he added.

Benilde has been a member of the NCAA since Season 74 in 1998 and grabbed its first overall championship in Season 81 in 2005. As a platform for student athletes, Benilde supports its varsity teams’ participation in the NCAA and other offseason and preseason tournaments that further their game and enrich their experiences as student athletes.

In Season 99, the Benilde Blazers bagged a number of podium finishes, among these were the three-peating Women’s Volleyball Team, the Men’s and Women’s Lawn Tennis Team, the Men’s Soft Tennis Team, and the Men’s Table Tennis Team who emerged as champions.

On the other hand, the Men’s Football Team, the Men’s and Women’s Swimming Team, the Men’s and Women’s Taekwondo Team, and the Men’s Badminton Team were first runners up in the respective events. Also finishing in third after their season were the Men’s Basketball Team, the Women’s Badminton Team, the Women’s Table Tennis Team, the Women’s Soft Tennis Team, and the Track and Field Team.
