The School of Environment and Design (SED) of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde led a seminar on inclusive architecture and accessibility last July 18 at the Design+Arts Campus. Titled Accessible by Design: A Physical Accessibility and Design Seminar, the event was organized in partnership with the Benilde Center for Inclusive Education (CIE) and was designed to engage Benildean students in inclusive design practices.
The seminar featured Ar. Erico “Rix” G. Abordo, Philippine Delegate to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP) and Co-Founder of Architects for Accessibility. Abordo shared his experiences in promoting disability-inclusive development across Asia and highlighted practical design solutions such as exterior lifts, adaptive pathways, and accessible planning for steep terrains.
Abordo emphasized that accessibility is not just a technical concern but a matter of equity. He encouraged students to design with empathy and to consider how built spaces can serve diverse users. His talk challenged attendees to rethink how architecture and design can remove barriers and promote dignity.
The Accessible by Design seminar was part of the School of Environment and Design’s (SED) broader push to make accessibility a core element of its academic and creative work; a commitment reflected across disciplines. In Fashion Design and Merchandising, students explored inclusive themes in Sinulid 2024, showcasing collections that addressed maternity wear, cultural identity, sustainability, and individuality. Interior Design students partnered with McDonald’s Philippines through the ReClassified initiative, transforming decommissioned furniture into modular classroom pieces that promote flexible, inclusive learning. Architecture students joined the 2025 Benilde Architecture and Design Innovation Prize (BADIP), proposing adaptive structures and inclusive urban solutions in response to climate realities. In Industrial Design, Kapwa (empathy, interconnectedness, and shared humanity) served as the guiding value in IDx 2025, a panel discussion where faculty and alumni explored how ethical, human-centered product design can respond to social and environmental challenges. These are just a few of the ways SED ensures that students stay grounded, connecting design theory with lived realities, and cultivating a practice rooted in empathy, relevance, and social responsibility.
The Benilde Center for Inclusive Education also played a key role in the event. CIE supports students with specific learning needs and promotes inclusive practices across the College from admission to graduation and into the workplace. It provides reasonable accommodations, fosters awareness and sensitivity, and works with other units to ensure that policies and programs are inclusive by design. These efforts contributed to Benilde’s recognition in June 2024 as the top institution in the Philippines for Reduced Inequalities in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. The award affirms the College’s hands-on approach to inclusion, where empathy, accessibility, and equity are built into everyday learning and campus life.
