USAID and Benilde SDEAS’ DO ACT Project Comes Full Circle
27 November 2024
On November 22, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde concluded the Deaf Out-of-School Youth Academic and Career Transitions (DO ACT) project, a transformative program that has opened new pathways for Deaf learners to access higher education and career opportunities. The culminating event, held at Hotel Benilde Maison de La Salle, marked the successful completion of this initiative, which demonstrates Benilde’s leadership in inclusive education.

The DO ACT program was launched earlier this year through the Php 2.5 million ASPIRE grant under the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID Opportunity 2.0) initiative. Designed to enhance Deaf out-of-school youth’s English language skills and support their transitions into academics and careers, the project was led by Benilde’s Center for External Linkages (CEL) and School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies (SDEAS).

As part of the initiative, representatives from CEL, SDEAS and Benilde Senior High School visited Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., earlier this year. The visit fostered the exchange of best practices in Deaf education, with insights from both Deaf professionals and hearing advocates.

The program aligns with USAID Opportunity 2.0’s broader mission to empower out-of-school youth in the Philippines through education, employment, and entrepreneurship. To date, the initiative has benefited over 70,000 youth, improving access to life-changing opportunities.

USAID described the program last September 29 as crucial in guiding Deaf OSYs’ journey toward higher education and career transitions. This collaboration with Gallaudet University and other global partners promises to drive lasting impact.

As USAID Philippines Mission Director Ryan Washburn said during the program’s launch, “Out-of-school youth deserve an equal opportunity to define the kind of life they want to live.” With the DO ACT project, Benilde continues to champion innovation and inclusion, offering Deaf youth the tools they need to succeed.
