From June 18-20, 2024, the 393rd AUN-QA Programme Assessment took place at De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde.
The assessment covered several programs including Bachelor of Science in International Hospitality Management, Bachelor of Arts in Multimedia Arts, Bachelor of Arts in Music Production, and the inclusion flagship Bachelor in Applied Deaf Studies (BAPDST) program. BAPDST stands out as Benilde’s initiative for promoting education accessibility and inclusion for marginalized groups, particularly persons with disabilities.
In preparation for the assessment, AUN-QA Assessors, Assistant Professor Dr. Jutarat Vibulphol and Dr. Nguyen Truong Sa, met with Benilde’s School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies (SDEAS) representatives. During the meeting, SDEAS OIC Dean Marian Patricia Bea Francisco, BAPDST Program Chair Ana Kristina Arce, SDEAS Faculty Raymond Manding, and Benilde Center for Academic Accreditation Director Geronio Ulayao presented an overview of Benilde and the BAPDST program. They also discussed Deaf awareness, addressing misconceptions about Deaf individuals, effective communication methods, and the role of interpreters.

AUN-QA recognized the meeting’s importance in improving quality and accessibility in education for persons with disabilities, viewing inclusion in higher education as a critical area for ASEAN and global development. AUN-QA also expressed gratitude for Benilde’s cooperation and trust during the assessment process.
SDEAS was founded in 1991 under De La Salle University’s Educational Development Department (EDD), initially offering a Certificate Program in Bookkeeping and Accounting for the deaf. Over time, the program evolved to recognize the uniqueness of Deaf culture and identity, and meet industry demands. The school offered several tracks in Business Outsourcing Services Management, Entrepreneurship, and Visual Media Arts within the BAPDST program.
In 2022, Benilde launched the Bachelor in Sign Language Interpretation (BSLI) program under SDEAS, complementing BAPDST. BSLI prepares students as professional sign language interpreters through a comprehensive curriculum covering linguistics, interpreting theories, practical assignments, and research opportunities. Graduates serve as vital links between Deaf and hearing communities. BSLI is the first sign language interpreting bachelor’s degree offered in the Philippines and one of the few in Asia.

Benilde, through SDEAS, has always advocated for the use of Filipino Sign Language (FSL), the natural language of the Filipino Deaf Community. The school has actively collaborated with various organizations and individuals in pushing for policies that would benefit the Filipino Deaf Community. SDEAS, through its associates, has pushed for and provided FSL interpreters for news insets and media as early as 2010. The enactment of the Filipino Sign Language Law in 2018 has compelled SDEAS to enhance its leadership in Deaf education and expand Filipino Sign Language training for educators and key stakeholders. At present, SDEAS remains committed to advancing its research initiatives while continuously improving its curricula, programs, and services.
Benilde SDEAS also offers the Filipino Sign Language Learning Program, catering to individuals and professionals interested in learning FSL to communicate effectively with the Deaf community.
Recently, Benilde was also recognized by Times Higher Education as the Philippines’ top educational institution, ranking in the 301-400 bracket globally for its commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 10, which focuses on reducing inequalities.
