Navigating Change: A Journey of Resilience and Mastery in Tourism and Hospitality Management

The pandemic caught everyone by surprise. This included students and professionals grappling with new learning modes and working platforms. Each individual coped differently, given the unprecedented situation, and Dean Gabriel C. Ng Tio decided it was the perfect time to take his master’s degree. “I decided to pursue this program when there was nothing else to do. Fortunately, I enjoyed the course throughout the years.”

Now a Master of Science in Tourism and Hospitality Management (MSTHM) graduate with high distinction, Dean Gabriel is very fond of his choice. “When I started, I backed from challenges and wanted to quit demanding tasks, but now, being a graduate student, those hard tasks led me to become who I am right now.”

Benilde’s Master of Science in Tourism and Hospitality Management is designed to develop the leadership and managerial skills of the students by developing a systematic critical awareness of the current issues in the tourism and hospitality industries, specifically in the areas of marketing, financial, human resource, and operational viewpoints.

“The skill set that I am most proud of is learning how to manage people in the industry,” Dean Gabriel shares, “this also includes how to manage one’s work (load). Benilde evolves what we already know.”

Since MSTHM students are expected to analyze critical issues and apply relevant knowledge to a range of complex situations through in-depth studies of cases or situational analysis, the program is a perfect fit for the Operations Manager of his own business, Society’s Daily Bread Bakery & Bakeshop. “The practice and immersions prepared and helped me apply all I have learned to our business. Life in Benilde is like no other because of the bond students and professors have that makes our school a safe, inclusive space for everyone.”

He will miss the camaraderie of the students and professors the most. “We worked together during different events, online workshops, and seminars. The curriculum, syllabus, and techniques imparted by the professors, Program Chair, and Dean helped a lot. I can (now) work better and properly with colleagues in the industry.”

With highly specialized courses like Human Capital Management in Tourism and Hospitality Strategic Management in a Global Environment, Dean Gabriel excitedly invites new students to his chosen program, “I suggest that you take it now. It is a smooth and work-friendly program for professionals like me.”
