De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde has partnered with Philippine Airlines to offer students hands-on training in the aviation and tourism industries. The agreement, formalized on May 8, 2025, at the Lucio K. Tan Jr. Center in Pasay, was signed by key representatives from both Benilde and Philippine Airlines. Signing on behalf of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde were Chancellor Benhur Ong, Vice Chancellor for Academics Angelo Marco Lacson, and Dr. Marie Paz Castro, Dean of the School of Hotel, Restaurant, and Institution Management. Representing Philippine Airlines, Inc. were Atty. Carlos Luis D. Fernandez, Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, and General Counsel, and Alvin Kendrich O. Limqueco, Senior Vice President & Chief Supply Chain Officer. Meanwhile, Air Philippines Corporation was represented by President Rabbi Vincent L. Ang and Vice President for Ground Operations Group Mathew R. Tamaray. Also present was Mr. Sherlo Reyes, Director of the Benilde Center for External Linkages, who played a key role in facilitating the partnership.
The partnership with Philippine Airlines will be open to students across different programs in Benilde, providing a diverse range of learners with valuable hands-on experience in airline operations. Among these, students from the Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management program under the School of Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management (SHRIM) are particularly well-positioned to maximize the benefits of the internship. Through its specializations in Tourism Creations, Tourism Entrepreneurship, and Tourism Relations, the program equips learners with skills in innovation, business management, and strategic industry engagement—all of which align with key facets of airline operations, including customer service, travel management, and destination marketing.
At the signing, Chancellor Benhur Ong emphasized the value of real-world experience in shaping students’ careers. “We are constantly evolving our programs to ensure students gain practical knowledge that goes beyond textbooks. This partnership with Philippine Airlines is a significant step in bridging academic learning with industry exposure,” he said. He further highlighted the long-term impact of the collaboration, stating, “Internships like these don’t just provide skills—they open doors. The insights students will gain here can shape their futures in ways that extend far beyond the classroom.”
Through structured training, students will rotate across PAL’s departments, learning from industry experts while developing professional connections. Beyond internships, the partnership will facilitate guest lectures, mentorship programs, joint training sessions, and research initiatives focused on addressing industry challenges.
The collaboration builds upon SHRIM’s strong foundation in hospitality and tourism education. Over the years, the school has developed programs that align with industry demands and provide students with immersive learning experiences. Within the broader Benilde community, alumni have gone on to leadership roles in tourism and aviation. Stanley Ng, a Benilde graduate, previously served as president of Philippine Airlines and now holds the position of vice president at PAL Holdings while serving as a member of the airline’s board of directors. Captain Sahl Andrew Onglatco, a recent SHRIM graduate through Benilde’s Expanded Tertiary Education, Equivalency and Accreditation Program, is the founder and CEO of Sky AeroTrade and Topflite Academy. His background as a former flight steward at Philippine Airlines gives him valuable industry insights that support aviation training and business development. Their achievements show how Benilde’s programs help develop skilled professionals who make an impact in tourism and aviation.
On the same day, Benilde also finalized a partnership with AsiaWorld Hospitality to expand hospitality training and micro-credentialing programs for students and faculty. This collaboration reinforces SHRIM’s commitment to industry-aligned education by offering specialized certifications that enhance competitiveness in global hospitality markets. The agreement paves the way for practical training initiatives, ensuring learners and educators alike stay updated with evolving industry standards.
With a range of specialized programs, SHRIM provides students with industry-focused training tailored to different sectors within tourism and hospitality. Whether in Culinary Arts Management, Hospitality and Luxury Management, International Hospitality Management, or Tourism Management, each program equips learners with expertise relevant to its specific field, ensuring they are well-prepared for careers in their chosen industry segment.
