September ushered in the first full month of AY 2026–2027 with achievements and developments across the Benildean Community. Students and faculty earned recognition in design, marketing, film, and the creative industries, while international collaborations opened opportunities for learning and exchange. New healthcare and media partnerships, sustainability initiatives, and updates from the Townhall Assembly also shaped the month. This issue of Perspective brings together the people, ideas, and initiatives contributing to Benilde’s continuing work in education, creativity, and community-building.
The Benilde Townhall Assembly 2026 brought associates together on September 10 at the Design + Arts Campus Theater for an afternoon of updates, conversations, and celebration. Hosted by CIP Planning Officers Ms. Mary Diane Ilagan and Ms. Angeli Villamor, the gathering carried a Filipino fiesta theme, with associates attending in person at the Design + Arts Campus and watching the program via Zoom from the Blackbox and Benilde Antipolo.
For Brother Edmundo Fernandez FSC, Benilde Brother President, the gathering felt familiar in a way that went beyond a regular town hall. “Today feels less like a town hall and more like a reunion,” Brother Dodo said.
Brother Dodo connected the Filipino fiesta with unity, malasakit, and the spirit of welcoming others into one’s home. As he put it, “Ang tunay na diwa ng fiesta ay tungkol sa pagkakaisa, malasakit, at pagbubukas ng ating tahanan para sa ibang tao.” He thanked associates for the dedication, creativity, service, and care they bring to their work and to students. “At the heart of this institution is you,” he said.
The gathering also included an earthquake drill in observance of the 3rd Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill, giving associates an opportunity to take part in a campus-wide safety activity during the assembly.
The leadership discussions that followed looked at where Benilde stands today, how it continues to serve its students, and what the College is preparing for in the coming years.
Building a Community that Lives the Mission
For Maria Veronica Templo Perez, Vice President for Lasallian Mission and Student Life, the Lasallian Mission takes shape through everyday work and relationships. “The Lasallian Mission in the everyday life of a Benildean is doing ordinary things extraordinarily well,” VP Nicky said.
She pointed to the range of institutional mission activities held throughout the past year, including Lasallian Mission Week and Benildean Mission Week, and how these activities create opportunities for associates and students to come together. She said their collective impact helps build a stronger sense of community across Benilde, giving associates and students more chances to meet people outside their usual offices, schools, or organizations.
She encouraged the Community to take part simply by showing up “Show up. That’s it. Come, show up, volunteer,” she said. Students can take part through student organizations, special interest groups, and student government, while associates can also suggest and build activities that bring people together.
VP Nicky also looked ahead to Benilde’s 40th anniversary, which the College will celebrate through a year-long celebration leading to its 40th year in 2028. She called on the Community to recognize the people who helped build Benilde, appreciate what the College has become, and continue thinking about what it can become next.
Enrollment, Student Achievements, and Quality
Chancellor Benhur Ong said Benilde’s enrollment has remained on an upward trajectory over the past five years, even as the College works within a changing education landscape shaped by economic conditions and competition from both public and private institutions.
He said the latest application cycle also showed encouraging signs. According to Chancellor Benhur, Benilde saw about a 20 percent increase in inquiries through its application portal compared with the previous year.
The next task, he said, is to convert more of those inquiries into actual enrollment while continuing the work that has helped build Benilde’s reputation.
For Chancellor Benhur, the most meaningful recognitions are those earned by students. “The most significant awards are really the ones that are won by our students,” he said.
He pointed to recent board and licensure examination results, including Architecture and Real Estate Management, as well as the achievements of Benilde Antipolo students. He also cited Benilde’s growing number of Michelin-recognized chefs as another source of pride.
These achievements connect with the College’s continuing work on academic quality and accreditation. Chancellor Benhur discussed Benilde’s existing national and international program accreditations and the goal of moving toward institutional recognition.
Geronio Ulayao, Provost of Benilde Antipolo and Director for Quality Management and Accreditation, explained what this means at the institutional level.
“Accredited programs or certified programs would normally denote an above-average level of quality in terms of the curriculum design, in terms of faculty, in terms of the instructional delivery, in terms of support systems that will enable the students to achieve the outcomes of the program,” Provost Onyoy said.
Institutional assessment looks at the College as a whole. It considers whether the processes, procedures, and support systems across different offices work together to help programs deliver quality education. “That means that the entire institution, not just the program, is demonstrating a high level of quality in terms of processes and procedures that help in the effective delivery of its programs,” he said.
The work requires participation from different parts of the College, including academics, administration, finance, and other support offices. Provost Onyoy also encouraged faculty and associates to give continuous feedback so offices can identify gaps and find ways to improve their processes.
Opening More Pathways for Learners
The leadership team also discussed ways Benilde is expanding how students can access and experience education.
Brother Dodo described continuing efforts to find new pathways for learners and make education more accessible. He said Benilde’s willingness to explore programs outside traditional models remains one of the things that sets the College apart. “We are not traditional. We are well, obviously, inclusive. We are not afraid to try new things,” he said.
Chancellor Benhur pointed to several developments that support this direction. Benilde has started working on multiple pathways for learners and is offering options such as second degrees. The College is also among the schools authorized to issue micro-credentials, opening possibilities for shorter learning experiences that can connect with undergraduate studies.
He described the potential of micro-credentials through a simple example: an elective course could be offered as a micro-credential and credited toward an undergraduate program.
The College is also expanding its global learning opportunities. Angelo Marco U. Lacson, Vice Chancellor for Academics, said internationalization has grown from the work of a few schools and programs into a wider College culture.
“It used to be driven by one or two schools or programs, but now you see many schools participating in internationalization initiatives. I’m very happy that it has now become a culture in the entire College,” VC Lacson said.
Students can take part in international learning without leaving the country. Through Collaborative Online International Learning, or COIL, they can work with students from partner universities abroad. Benilde also brings international perspectives to campus through visiting professors and exchange students. “You can still participate in internationalization activities even if you don’t have a passport,” VC Lacson said.
He also discussed Benilde’s licensure performance and said the College is working toward stronger board examination results, including a goal of having passers perform 10 percent above the national passing rate. He added that the College is developing new partnerships with international art and business schools.
Building Spaces and Systems for the Next Stage
The College is also investing in physical spaces, campus services, and digital systems.
Michael Luis Fernando D. Tecson III, Vice President for Administration, shared updates on classroom renovations, new learning spaces, campus security, and other facilities. Senior High School classrooms are undergoing improvements, including ceiling work intended to make rooms brighter and improve acoustics. New acoustic pods have also been installed on the sixth floor of the Design + Arts Campus for Music Production.
Other academic spaces include tourism facilities designed with a cabin and airport lounge setup.
Brother Ceci Hall, the retrofitted building beside the Hi-Fi parking area, will house the SLIMS Fashion School. The building will also include a library, classrooms, and the Collective Hub, which will feature a café and a venue where future ateliers can showcase their work.
Students will also have another space to spend time and build community at The Yard, a roughly 900-square-meter property between the Atrium and Hi-Fi parking area. The space will include food stalls, merchandise, Wi-Fi, and security, with students encouraged to use the area to sell their own products.
Benilde is also installing a 10-gig fiber backbone at the Taft Campus to improve internet connectivity and support services that depend on faster network access.
On the HR side, VP Butch shared updates on improvements to employee benefits, including adjustments following changes to the government’s de minimis ceiling. He also announced an across-the-board salary increase for associates in Manila and Antipolo starting this school year.
The College is also reviewing its total rewards system with Willis Towers Watson to look at the competitiveness of salaries and benefits. VP Butch assured associates that the study will not result in salary diminution or the removal of positions, and that recommendations will be discussed with associates before implementation.
Digital systems are also becoming part of how Benilde manages its operations. Tirso Raymond S. Gutierrez, Vice President for Finance, introduced BEStAR, which currently provides real-time enrollment figures through charts and visualizations.
VP Mon said the system can help management make decisions using more timely information. He also shared plans to develop BEStAR further so it can eventually cover broader operational and financial data. “This would be able to help our management decide immediately,” he said.
As BEStAR grows beyond enrollment monitoring, the system has the potential to become a larger management tool and could place Benilde among the first colleges in the country to use real-time data in this way. For HR services, Benilde also uses Traverse, a platform that houses timekeeping, payroll, benefits, and other HR-related services.
Growing Across Campuses and Disciplines
Provost Onyoy said one of Benilde Antipolo’s most important achievements over the past year has been the closer collaboration between the Antipolo and Manila campuses. Schools and units from Manila have worked with the Antipolo campus, while other parts of the College have contributed equipment and systems to support its development. “What I could consider would be the much deeper and closer collaboration between Manila and Antipolo campuses,” he said.
Benilde Antipolo is also looking at the development of its vacant property near the campus. Provost Onyoy said the project could significantly increase the campus’s capacity.
The campus is also developing its cultural programs. Its new Benilde Romançon Chamber Singers (BERCS) aims to become a leading performing choir in Rizal, with more cultural groups expected to follow.
At the institution-wide level, Chancellor Benhur pointed to the upcoming ASEANA campus as one of the biggest developments to watch. The new campus will add space for Benilde’s growing academic and institutional needs.
He also shared plans for the SLIMS Fashion School and the future fashion museum. Together with the Fashion and Design Merchandising program, these initiatives could help Benilde build a stronger presence in fashion education. “We can now work towards being known as the center of fashion education in the country,” Chancellor Benhur said.
Looking Beyond the 40th Anniversary
For Brother Dodo, the developments underway also raise a bigger question as Benilde approaches its 40th anniversary. He described the College as experimental and bold, pointing to its history of trying new approaches in education. He also said Benilde now needs to push beyond the boundaries it has established over the past four decades.
“Benilde at the start had no envelope. But I think in the past 40 years, we have already set boundaries. And I think we need to push beyond that,” he said. That means continuing to develop new programs, finding new ways to make education accessible, and making the College more agile in how it works. Brother Dodo acknowledged that Benilde still has systems that move slowly even as the institution is known for innovation. He sees developments such as the ASEANA campus and new academic offerings as part of that next stage.
Chancellor Benhur also pointed to the College’s application inquiries, online presence, upcoming facilities, and academic developments as reasons to look ahead with confidence. He encouraged associates to take part in marketing and other efforts that can help the College turn growing interest into enrollment.
The Townhall ended with a call for associates to keep working together as Benilde enters another year of growth and prepares for its 40th anniversary.
In his closing remarks, Chancellor Benhur said the coming months will bring opportunities to grow, innovate, improve services, and create a better experience for the Benildean Community. He acknowledged that the College will face questions and challenges along the way, while expressing confidence that the Community can work through them together. “Benilde is at its strongest when we all work together,” he said.
He asked associates to approach the coming months with “anticipation” and look forward to what the Community can create, improve, and accomplish together.
“One Benilde, one Community, one shared commitment to move forward.”

The College, through its Center for External Linkages (CEL), pursued new international partnerships in the Czech Republic and Spain from August 28 to September 4, 2026, to expand opportunities for students to gain workplace experience abroad.
In Prague, CEL Director Sherlo Reyes signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the European Centre for Career Education (ECCEDU), represented by Managing Director Tomas Hulle, on August 28. The agreement establishes a framework for practical education, customized learning programs, and internship opportunities in partner companies in Prague and Madrid. Initial placement priorities include business, information technology, and environmental design-related programs. Both parties also discussed opportunities for International Exposure Trips and broader on-the-job training opportunities for students in Design and Arts.
The visit also included meetings with industry partners in both countries. On August 31, Benilde formalized a Student Internship Abroad Program (SIAP) partnership with Posedla in the Czech Republic. On September 1, it signed another SIAP agreement with TELMA AI, a Prague-based company specializing in artificial intelligence, conversational systems, and business automation. In Madrid, Benilde signed an agreement with Edvolution, an education technology and IT consulting company, on the same date. These partnerships identified potential internship opportunities across business, management, information technology, and creative disciplines.
CEL also met with representatives of the Czech Republic’s Ministry of Industry and Trade on August 28 to explore opportunities for student internships, industry partnerships, and academic cooperation. The discussion covered possible connections with Czech universities, government agencies, and business organizations, as well as potential pathways for further collaboration in education and workforce development.
Other engagements focused on prospective host companies. Visits to HH Global in Prague and Recoletos Broker in Madrid allowed Benilde to explore potential internship placements in global marketing services, insurance brokerage, risk management, and related business operations. The parties discussed possible arrangements for qualified students, with a formal agreement with Recoletos Broker to follow its internal legal review.
To support the implementation of the program, CEL also inspected prospective student accommodation in Prague and Madrid. The assessments covered room arrangements, security measures, essential amenities, accessibility, and compliance with applicable Commission on Higher Education (CHED) requirements for SIAP. Workplace visits likewise allowed Benilde to assess potential learning environments, supervision arrangements, student safety, and the suitability of internship assignments.
These engagements form part of Benilde’s continuing efforts to develop international academic and industry linkages that give students opportunities to apply their learning in professional settings. As the agreements and prospective partnerships progress, CEL will continue working toward internship arrangements that support students’ academic programs, professional development, and international exposure.
